Subverting Power and Desire: Essays on Titarubi’s 'Surrounding David'
01 Aug 2008 03:30

Titarubi's “Surrounding David” is a commission of the National Museum of Singapore’s Art-On-Site public art program (open for public viewing from March to August 2008). In this site-specific artwork, Titarubi makes a fiberglass copy Michelangelo's David, placed at the center of the Museum's Rotunda. She has enlarged the size of David, almost two times larger than the original one and wrapped up the whole of David’s body—the ideal male which was originally naked—in a bright color brocade fabric, a fine weave fabric which formed the pattern of tendrils and flowers, and is commonly used as traditional kebaya clothing material for Indonesian women, especially in Java and Bali. David's muscular body looks weightless, translucent, and transparent, with beam of lights coming out from it.
Essays in this book are critical readings of Titarubi’s “Surrounding David”. They connect this artwork with women issues, repression, sexuality, beauty, power, and desire. The book is also supplemented with a documentary and photos from the making process of Surrounding David.
